Description: Learn the basics of beginning old-time Appalachian clawhammer style banjo: tunings, the basic stroke or “bum-diddy,” how to play a melody, beginner exercises, 2-3 tunes, and an introduction to the drop thumb technique. Students must have their own banjo in good working condition.
Instructor Bio: Cary Fridley has a Masters in Music Education from UNC-G and has provided professional workshop instruction at Mars Hill Old-Time Music Week, LEAF, Dusty Strings Traditional Workshops in Seattle, WA, the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia, Kauffman Kamp, and The Swannanoa Gathering. She began playing the banjo as a teenager, and made her mark in the 1990’s as guitarist and singer with the Freight Hoppers. Cary currently plays bass and sings with WNC bands The Sweet Dreamers and the Haywood Ramblers.
Cary Fridley and Down South will be guests on Local Color with Laura Blackley on November 27, 2013 to promote their upcoming show at Jack of the Wood in Asheville, NC on November 30. Also on the show will be Darin Gentry, local Black Mountain old-time fiddler and banjo player. He is promoting a new project that will bring musicians from Haiti to North Carolina to perform.
Yodel-ay-hee-hee! Old-time Singing Class begins on October 1, meeting on Tuesdays from 6-7:30pm. $20/class due at the beginning of each month. Please email caryfridley@gmail.com to register.
This class will consist of 30 minutes of breathing, posture, and tonal warm-ups, and 1 hour learning traditional songs, hymns, and ballads, sometimes with harmonies, as a group. Ability to match pitch and carry a tune is required. Repertoire will draw from The Carter Family, early bluegrass duet singers, Madison County Ballads, and the country Baptist Hymnal.
