
What we will cover: Learn the basics of the old-time Appalachian clawhammer style banjo: tunings, the basic stroke or “bum-diddy,” how to play a melody, beginner exercises, 2-3 tunes, and an introduction to the drop thumb technique. Students must have their own banjo in good working condition.

Brief Bio of the Instructor
Cary Fridley has a Masters in Music Education from UNCG and has provided professional workshop instruction at Mars Hill Old-Time Music Week, LEAF, Dusty Strings Traditional Workshops in Seattle, WA, the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia, Kauffman Kamp, and The Swannanoa Gathering. She began playing the banjo as a teenager and made her mark in the 1990’s as guitarist and singer with the Freight Hoppers. Cary currently plays bass and sings with WNC bands The Sweet Dreamers and the Haywood Ramblers.
